How much does welding a muffler

How Much does Welding a Muffler? Budgeting for Muffler Welding!

A muffler or a silencer is part of an engine exhaust system designed to reduce the noise created by combustion.  The noise and the emission gases are sent through an exhaust system, which includes a muffler where the sound is reduced by a series of passages and chambers lined with fiberglass insulation. A muffler is also designed to cancel the opposite sound waves. Though a muffler sounds complicated, it can still be repaired by welding. The unit is fixed outside and under the vehicle, exposed to the environment and road grime. This article is about how much it will cost to weld a muffler and whether it is economical.

Can the Muffler be Welded?

A muffler is usually made of steel, and variations can be used to protect the unit.

  • Aluminized Steel – A coat of aluminum oxide is applied over steel to protect the steel from further corrosion. Damaged by scraping or wearing away of the aluminum oxide coat will result in rust.
  • Stainless Steel – Stainless steel is used to reduce corrosion and increase durability.
  • Other metals like chromium, nickel, manganese, copper and titanium – These metals are rust-resistant and will prolong the lifespan of the muffler.

A muffler can easily get damaged due to road grime, other environmental conditions, and the heat produced by the engine. But as the muffler is made out of steel or steel variation, it can be readily welded.

How Long does a Welded Muffler Last?

Depending on the damage, a welded muffler can last a whole lifetime of the muffler. This will depend on the materials used in manufacture and the skill level of the welder. A muffle can get damaged due to scraping or wearing.

The scraping of the muffler is mainly due to bumping against heavy objects. This includes careless driving on bumpy roads. The usual damages may include holes in the muffler or ripping off parts’ outer cover.

This type of damage can be easily detected by the engine’s sound and repaired by welding. Mufflers can get damaged due to wearing off.

This happens due to corrosion and excessive heat, which might lead to a repair or replacement. In both cases, a welded repair can be done successfully.

How Much does to Weld a Muffler?

The cost of welding a muffler will depend on various factors.

  • The Condition of the Muffler.
  • Place you are repairing.
  • Price of materials.
  • Labor cost.
  • Muffler size.

There are so many variables when calculating the welding price of a muffler. The labor cost should be higher as this is a specialized job. Another better part of the expenditure will be on behalf of the materials used as the mufflers can be made out of steel, coated steel and other metals like chromium, nickel, manganese, copper and titanium. Depending on the material, the welding cost may vary, and some may be expensive.

The below table gives us a rough idea of the muffler welding.

Type of Weld Cost
Minor muffler welding $30 to $70
Major muffler welding $100 to $150
Welding a new muffler $170 to $750

What factors decide the cost of welding a muffler

What Factors Decide the Cost of Welding a Muffler?

The above chapter describes the most significant factors when repairing a muffler, and so many other factors can contribute to the increase/decrease of the cost.

  • Labor Cost – This depends on the experience level of the welder. An experienced welder may cost more but with better results and less time.
  • Material Cost – As stated, depending on the materials used to make the muffler, the welding and metal plate prices may vary on top of the welding cost, which will be high for some metals.
  • Muffler Size – Understandably, a more oversized muffler will cost more on welding and will be more likely to get damaged.
  • The Condition of the Muffler – A welder will have to put more time and effort into fixing a damaged, rusty muffler than one in good condition and with less damage.
  • Muffler Type – Mufflers with complex designs will need more time to weld and will cost more on welding materials. Again these types will require experienced welders increasing the labor cost.
  • Location of the Muffler – Where and how the muffler is fixed on a vehicle effect the cost of the repair as it will take more time and effort to remove it and fix it back.

Is Welding a Muffler More Cost-effective than Replacing It?

Welding of a muffler will be more cost-effective, depending on the damage. If the muffler has extensive damage, heavily rusted, and if it is evident that it will be subjected to a repair shortly, it will be much more cost-effective to replace it.

A new muffler can be fixed to the exhaust pipe by clamps or welding. Both methods have their pros and cons.

Using a clamp will be easier in installation and dissembling and can even be done by an inexperienced person.

A clamp is weaker than welding, providing more space for leakages. It can get loose due to vibrations. This leaves welding as the best option for connecting a muffler to the exhaust system.

When considering the above facts, repairing and replacing a muffler will leave the owner with a considerable cost on welding, and a decision should be taken on the condition of the muffler.

Are There any Additional Expenses Associated with Muffler Welding?

The additional costs may include the de assembling and assembling charges as it is tough for some vehicles to remove the exhaust system. In some cases, the leaks will be hard to reach and weld as the exhaust system is fixed in the bottom of the vehicle. This will increase the repair cost.

There will be additional costs if any fiberglass insulation and steel plates are required to cover severe damages and highly corroded areas.

Except for the above, there will be no additional costs as no mechanical parts need repairs or servicing.

How Long does It Take to Weld a Muffler?

The time taken to weld a muffler will differ according to the damage to the unit. This will vary from a few minutes to some hrs. depending on the following,

  • Location of the Muffler – If the muffler is located in a location that is hard to reach and de-assemble, it will take more time for the overall job to complete.
  • Condition of the Muffler – if the muffler has serious damages or severe corrosion, it will take a long time to do the welding job.
  • Type of the Muffler – If the muffler is complicated by design, a long time will be taken to do the welding.
  • Similarly, muffler size will also add to the time.
